The Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) Demonstrator project was a £4.18 million grant scheme that ran throughout the 2021/22 financial year.
It was designed to support improvements to existing district or communal heating projects to deliver short-term and sustained efficiency improvements, reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, and improve outcomes for customers and operators. The Demonstrator project subsequently laid the foundations for the main scheme, which opened to applications in 2023.

The West Hampstead Square project, a Ballymore development completed in 2017, encompassing 197 dwellings across seven blocks, sought to optimise its existing heat network setup.
- Loughborough Park, The Guinness Partnership
The Loughborough Park project, a 9-year-old development by The Guinness Partnership (TGP) in Brixton, comprises 487 dwellings.
- Holyrood, Southampton City Council
Holyrood is a 25-year-old development run by Equans UK in Southampton. The complex serves 274 dwellings across 10 blocks.
- Southbank Tower, SSE
The Southbank Tower project, a collaboration between Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) and FairHeat, aimed to optimise the heat network serving Southbank Tower, a mixed-use development in Southwark.
