The Climate Change Committee (CCC) has released its 2024 Annual Progress Report to Parliament, and it’s a wake-up call for UK net zero efforts.
This report details the UK’s advancements towards achieving net zero and evaluates the current policy framework supporting these efforts. It also offers several recommendations for how the UK Government can expedite progress toward net zero. This briefing highlights the report’s key findings and recommendations across various relevant sectors.
The UK has pledged to reduce emissions by 68% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, as part of its Nationally Determined Contribution to the 2015 Paris Agreement. However, with only six years remaining until 2030, the CCC has determined that the UK is not on track to meet this target. While significant progress has been made by phasing out coal-generated electricity, further decarbonisation, especially of the gas network, is urgently required.
The new Labour government has a tough job ahead. They need to act fast with strong policies, get everyone on board, and navigate the political landscape to meet our 2030 targets.
Time is running out, and it seems we need to step up our game.
