ISG Ltd Case Study

1st Aug, 2020

Introduction – The Client

ISG Ltd is a leading global construction services company specialising in technology, construction and fit out. They are headquartered in London, UK, and employ over 3,000 staff across more than 24 countries and pride themselves on being focused on becoming better, smarter, and more innovative than ever before.

Since 2018, Gemserv has been supporting ISG globally in its data protection governance framework and oversight through a long-term implementation project and our Virtual Data Protection Officer service. Our work involved working in a multi-jurisdictional environment, delivering privacy advice in all countries ISG operates, in particular in Europe and in Asia Pacific.

The Challenge

As ISG operates and maintain construction sites across the world for a wide range of customers, the pandemic quickly raised extremely acute challenges for these sites, some of them being of a critical nature. The health and safety of those sites was the priority, along with the necessity to be able to carry on the work in a sustainable manner while addressing privacy concerns.

Our Approach

Gemserv was able to bring in-depth knowledge of both data protection laws and our experience working with various large industries to tackle those challenges. Priority areas in the context of Covid-19 included:

  • Advising on health data collection on construction sites to answer ISG’s duty of care as an employer.
  • Assessing cutting edge technologies such as biometrics to ensure the security of construction sites while mitigating privacy concerns through Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs).
  • Advising on complex legal matters on employee monitoring across multiple jurisdictions.

The Outcome

Through our expertise and flexible remote working capability, we have been able to continue delivering our excellent data protection advice service to ISG in particularly challenging and demanding times. We will continue to support ISG through this period and help coming out of lockdown in both business pragmatical and privacy preserving ways.
