“Across all sectors but especially within the local authority space, there is much discussion about how to bring about digital and data transformation and new technologies for the good of our citizens. To do this, we must consider the ethics of data processing. Ivana Bartoletti and her team at Gemserv were able to offer a citizen centred approach to the key challenges facing us as a local authority.
The workshop that Gemserv delivered for us received positive feedback from all participants, including those who initially seemed reluctant to see the value and importance of Data Ethics. We found that the workshop gave us a detailed but accessible overview of data ethics and governance, as well as practical tools that we needed to apply the principles in our work practices. What truly set Ivana (and Gemserv) apart – and was remarked upon favourably by our senior colleagues in the room – was the level of political knowledge of the council, and how applied the presentation was.
This workshop has given us useful considerations as we develop a wider citizen charter which we are now progressing with. We are also developing a second document, a working tool by which we will assess the ethics of all new data projects.”
