COP25 2019 – Smart Energy Code & Connected Devices

9th Dec, 2019

We are at the beginning of the second week of COP25 talks. The negotiations thus far have focused on Article 6 Carbon Markets, the finalising of Paris Agreement ‘rule book’ and what needs to be done to help certain countries that have suffered ‘loss and damage’ direct from changes in climate. This blog (part four of our COP25 series) explains how our Smart Energy Code Administrator and Secretariat (SECAS) Team and Connected Devices Team are influencing change in smart metering and renewable energy spaces contributing to UK objectives at the COP25 Summit.

The Smart Energy Code (SEC) defines the rights and obligations of Energy Suppliers, Network Operators and other Parties involved in the end to end delivery of smart metering in Great Britain. In 2013, Gemserv was awarded the SECAS contract. The code has recently been digitised, using an online platform called CodeWorks, to help SEC Parties to better understand their obligations under the code and improve how they interact with the SEC. SECAS is playing a key role in the smart meter rollout to achieve the goal of smart meters in 90% of UK households.

Smart home devices including Consumer Access Devices (CADs) access real-time energy data that can be utilised for Time of Use Tariffs. Time of Use Tariffs are designed to alert consumers about off-peak times to use energy and balance demand. At Gemserv, the Connected Devices Team have worked in the CAD space facilitating a more central, digitalised smarter energy system driving positive consumer behaviours and realising better efficiencies by integrating renewable power demand-side.

In addition to this, we are also helping innovators of clean, low carbon technologies and working closely with the Energy Systems Catapult to accelerate route to market and ensure Cyber Security and Data Privacy risks to wide-scale deployment, are minimised.

The energy value system is at an inflection point where disparate, siloed and disconnected data is coming together through various industry initiatives such as Energy Data Task Force’s “Strategy for Modern Digitalised Energy System”. We are helping to remove friction with the deployment of cutting-edge innovation using emerging technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) and Blockchain to help unlock the benefits to the entire energy network and ultimately consumers. These also give rise to new engagement models such as energy-as-a-service and peer-to-peer trading of renewable energy. Peer-to-peer trading of renewables allows utilities to engage with entirely new markets of distribution assets in a more efficient way whilst continuing to provide the benefit of cheaper electricity and/or additional gains to the consumer.

At Gemserv we are playing our part in helping all of us to stop thinking of energy as simply another commodity but instead building a decarbonised, decentralised system – making things that matter work better for everyone.
